How to choose a dog groomer in Tampa Bay

By Groomer ScoutUpdated November 6, 2026Figures refresh from live listings

A groom is a few hours of someone handling your dog with clippers, dryers and water. Most visits go fine. These are the checks worth ten calm minutes before the first one.

Start with what your dog needs

A bath and brush, a full groom with a breed cut, a nail trim and a puppy intro are different visits. Cats, very large dogs and dogs with matted coats may need a groomer who says so up front. You can filter the directory by full groom, mobile grooming, cat grooming or a self-serve dog wash.

Across 26 areas we list 320 groomers (as of November 6, 2026): 260 for full grooms, 81 for mobile grooming, 106 for cat grooming and 29 for self-serve washes.

Ask about training and certification

We do not claim that Florida licenses dog groomers. Training varies a lot, and many good groomers learned on the job. Ask how they trained, how long they have groomed your dog’s breed, and whether they hold a certification from a grooming organization. If a local rule matters to you, check with your county or city.

38 groomers name a grooming certification. That is what the business states, not something we have verified.

Ask where your dog will wait

Some groomers keep dogs in crates or cages before and after the groom, and some do not. Neither answer is automatically right for every dog, but you should know. Ask how long a dog is crated, whether dryers are used on crated dogs, and how often someone checks on them. More on cages, sedation and vaccinations.

41 groomers say they are cage-free and 5 groomers say they never sedate.

Insurance

Accidents are rare but real: a nick from clippers, a slip off the table, a dog that gets out of the door. Ask whether the business is insured and what happens if your dog is hurt. A certificate of insurance is a normal thing to ask for.

13 groomers state that they are insured. We show the statement as published; we do not see the policy.
