Mobile grooming vs a salon: what to expect from each
A mobile groomer comes to you in a van or trailer. A salon is a shop you drive to. Both can do a good job. The right one depends on your dog, your schedule and what you want asked and answered.
What mobile grooming offers
- One dog at a time. Many mobile groomers work on one dog at a time, with no other dogs around. Ask whether that is true for the one you are considering.
- No car ride and no waiting. That helps nervous dogs, senior dogs and busy owners.
- You are close by. Ask whether you are expected to stay home, and whether you can watch.
81 groomers in our directory list mobile grooming (as of November 6, 2026).
What a salon offers
- More space and equipment. A shop may have larger tubs, tables and several dryers, which can help with big dogs or heavy coats.
- Several groomers. That can mean more appointment choices, and sometimes walk-ins.
- Other dogs around. Some dogs enjoy it. Others find the noise and the barking stressful.
85 groomers mention walk-ins and 32 groomers mention same-day appointments. 10 groomers offer pick-up and drop-off.
Questions for either one
- How do you dry the coat? Humid weather makes thorough drying important, and a hot dog should never be left under a dryer.
- How do you keep the dog cool? In a van, ask about air conditioning and what happens if the vehicle’s power or air fails.
- Where does my dog wait? In a salon, ask about crates and cages. Questions to ask.
- How long will the groom take, and will I get a pickup or finished time?
- Are you insured, and what is your policy if my dog is hurt?
How to decide
If your dog is anxious, old or struggles with car rides, a mobile groomer is worth a look. If your dog is large, heavily coated or likes other dogs, a salon may be fine. If you are unsure, book a short first visit and watch how your dog comes home. A self-serve wash is another option if you want to do the bathing yourself.
